The dispute process
Four rounds you control, plus CFPB escalation
You can dispute inaccurate or unverifiable items yourself. CreditRaccoon helps you prepare draft letters and track deadlines. You choose when to send each one.
Start with your report, not a template blizzard
Import or carefully review your bureau reports first. Flag only items you believe are inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, or unverifiable, or that you do not recognize.
CreditRaccoon can help you organize those flags and prepare draft letters, but you decide what is worth disputing and when to escalate.
A common self-directed round sequence
Round 1 is usually a basic dispute to the bureau that lists the item. In many cases the bureau has about 30 days to investigate (timing can vary with circumstances).
If the bureau says the item was verified but the response looks thin, some people send a Method of Verification request asking how it was verified.
If responses still look incomplete, a warning letter can document what you already sent and what you plan to do next. That does not guarantee a different outcome.
You can also dispute directly with the furnisher (the company reporting the data) under FCRA §623. Use a creditor-facing draft when that is the right audience.
As a later option, you can file a free complaint yourself at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. CreditRaccoon can help you organize paste-ready notes; you submit the complaint.
Tracking without losing control
Note the date you mailed or submitted each letter, keep copies, and watch for written responses. If you use CreditRaccoon’s tracker, you mark statuses yourself (for example, that you sent a letter or that you reported an update on your file).
Patience matters. Investigations take time, and accurate negative history can legally remain even after a thorough process.

- Round 3: Warning letter documenting your next steps if the response is incomplete.
- Round 4: Direct furnisher dispute under FCRA §623 to the company reporting the item.
- Last resort: Prepare paste-ready notes in CreditRaccoon, then file a free CFPB complaint yourself at consumerfinance.gov/complaint.
- Accurate negative information may remain even after you dispute it. Outcomes are not guaranteed.
FAQ
How long does a bureau investigation usually take?
Many FCRA investigations run about 30 days, though timing can vary. Track the date you sent your dispute and keep the bureau’s written response.
Should I dispute everything at once?
Usually no. Prioritize clear errors and items you can explain. Flooding a report with weak disputes rarely helps and can make your file harder to manage.
Does CreditRaccoon send disputes for me?
No. You review drafts, then copy, download, mail, or submit them yourself. CreditRaccoon is a preparation and tracking toolkit.
